Week 7 â Individualized Plan for English/Dual Language Learner
Choose one of children described below based on
real-life scenarios. Create an individualized plan to share with the childâs
family that illustrates how you will support the child as a dual language
learner.
Child One: Dâandre
Four year oldDâandre has been attending your
early childhood program for the past two months. His parents are from Jamaica.
You see his mother on a regular basis as she brings Dâandre to and from your
program. She speaks both English and Patois, the spoken language of Jamaica.
She tells you that the family primarily speaks Patois at home, but that Dâandre
understands some English because he watches a lot of television and plays with
children in their apartment complex. Dâandre is an active and enthusiastic
child. You observe that he seems to enjoy building with blocks and
manipulatives, drawing, and putting puzzles together. On the playground you
watch as he eagerly engages in super hero play. Dâandre is very animated and
expressive as he talks, but it is often difficult to understand what he is
trying to say because he speaks in a combination of Patois and English. He
sometimes gets frustrated when others cannot understand him.
You have a conference scheduled with Dâandreâs
mother next week. Develop an individualized plan to share with her that
supports Dâandre as a dual language learner. Include the following in your
plan:
â¢
Describe how you will
enhance the learning environment to support Dâandre as a dual language learner
â¢
Describe two strategies
that you will use to support Dâandre language and literacy development
â¢
Describe two strategies
that you will use to support Dâandre in Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics (STEM)
â¢
Suggest two ways that
Dâandreâs family can support his dual language learning at home
Child Two: Irina
Irina is a three year old child that was
recently enrolled in your early childhood program. Her family only speaks
Russian at home. During her first few days at the center, Irina tries to speak
Russian, but has fallen silent since no one can respond in her language. Her
frustration with the new language environment seems to be growing and she often
appears upset or withdrawn. You observe that she really seems to enjoy picture
books and painting with water colors. You have also noticed that her face
lights up during music and movement time.
You have a meeting scheduled with her parents at
the end of the week. Develop an individualized plan that supports Irina as a
dual language learner to share with her parents.
